Marine Research | Photography

Matt Kleczkowski BSc(Mar.Sci).Hons(Mar.Biol) is a marine scientist based in Perth, Western Australia. He began his career conducting marine ecological research for the commonwealth government (CSIRO) where he specialised in fish ecology, remote monitoring, and statistical analyses of data. Matt has since moved to the private sector where he designs studies and builds data/ analytics systems to measure and mitigate human impacts to the environment.

Matt naturally progressed into freelance photo journalism where he wrote feature articles and a marine biology column for Western Angler. However, it wasn’t until he first immersed an underwater camera rig that photography swiftly and irrevocably took over his life.

KleczPhoto's primary purpose is to explore the oceans and document their tantalisingly fleeting interactions and phenomena. At one extreme; the immense challenge and heartbreak of chasing the organised chaos of predators frenzying on baitballs in the open ocean.

At the other, falling into a trance suspended above one square metre of seafloor photographing patterns within abstracts for several hours . Or the comedy of attempting to lock focus on the small monsters of the sea that are the blennies; fiercely defending their hard won niches with interpretive dance and copious character.

KleczPhoto holds a comprehensive stock library of high resolution underwater images of such piscatorial episodes available by request for licensing and publication. The business has also developed an end to end colour managed workflow, producing precise colour reproduction on canvas, metallic and fine art prints using archival quality inks and media.
